It sounds deep and a lot, but pause for a second and think about how big a role your job plays in your day to day life. We all know that the line between work and home life is so blurred now that it barely exists, so instead of letting it control us, let’s wrestle back the power and make it work for us. The great news is that you don’t need a clear idea of your ‘dream job’ to do this, you don’t even need to leave your job for something else. This isn’t about turning your passion into your job, that’s a huge ask. A healthy career is like basic strength training: it prepares your body and mind, teaches you good techniques and sets you up to push through to the next level.
Everyone knows that minimal foundations are a recipe for disaster in any scenario, from building a house to applying your make-up. It’s worth taking the time and effort to do it properly and you’ll get a lasting result you can be proud of; skimp on it and your new, longed-for blusher will be gone within the hour! What a waste!
Why bother? When we think about careers, there’s a serious side too; according to the Health and Safety Executive, in Great Britain in 2019/2020 over 800,000 people were suffering from work-related stress, anxiety or depression and over half of all sick days taken were as a result of these issues and it’s on the rise.
The symptoms that we’re talking about are feeling exhausted, negative, cynical and less able to do your job alongside insomnia, sadness or anger and a tendency to go too far with either drugs and/or alcohol.
It’s true that we all have bad days but when these feelings and behaviours are with you more often than not, then it impacts your whole life.
In a nutshell, bad work-choices can make us ill. If you feel that work-related stress is starting to haunt you then the good news is that by doing a H.E.A.L.T.H.Y. check, you could re-set and re-start on those foundations. None of us wants to become a statistic!
